The Tang dynasty (618—907) was a Chinese dynasty and golden age in Chinese history. During the reign of Tang Taizong, the monk Tang Sanzang (Xuanzang) made his pilgrimage to India in search of Buddhist sutras. This is the time period during which Journey to the West takes place.
